Orbea is one of Africa’s most fascinating “stapeliadsucculent genera – leafless, clump-forming perennials with sharply toothed, four-angled stems often mottled maroon-on-green, and unforgettable carrion-scented blooms adapted for fly pollination. Flowers range widely in size and form (often with a distinctive raised central ring/annulus that inspired the genus name), and the plants typically produce paired horn-like seed follicles that release silky-tufted seeds to the wind. Naturally, Orbea is widespread across Africa and extends into the Arabian Peninsula, with especially rich diversity in southern Africa – making it a rewarding genus for collectors and gardeners who love unusual, ecologically clever succulents.

Orbea rogersii (Angolluma rogersii, Caralluma rogersii, Pachycymbium rogersii, Stapelia rogersii)

For collectors who love the strange and spectacular, Orbea rogersii is a true “show-and-tell” stapeliad: compact, architectural stems topped by starry blooms that look as if they’ve been dusted with tiny glass beads. It’s the kind of plant that turns a sunny windowsill or greenhouse bench into a mini natural-history exhibit – unusual, charismatic, and irresistibly collectible.

In the wild, this species occurs across the summer-rainfall interior and eastern parts of southern Africa, with records from Botswana and southern Zimbabwe through Eswatini and into South Africa’s Limpopo, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal, typically in dry shrubland/bushveld settings and open woodland.

Expect a tidy clumper of succulent, four-angled stems to about 10 cm tall, gradually forming a broader mound as it branches – perfect for shallow pots and gritty mineral mixes. The stems carry distinct conical tubercles that give the plant its sculpted, toothed silhouette, and it develops into an eye-catching specimen even when not in flower.

When it blooms, O. rogersii delivers wonderfully refined flowers (about 25–35 mm across) that often don’t open completely, staying intriguingly cupped with long, narrow lobes. Colour is typically pale green outside and pale greenish-yellow to whitish inside, finished with transparent, clubbed cilia along the lower margins – often described as pearl-tipped – plus a creamy corona that sits proudly at the centre.

Flowering is associated with the warm season in its natural range, with records of plants in bloom in late summer (for example, March in southern Zimbabwe). Like many Orbea, the flowers are adapted for fly pollination, adding to their fascinating, slightly “wild” character that stapeliad fans adore.

Bring this rarity into your collection from seed and enjoy the satisfaction of raising a truly distinctive African succulent from the start.
