Orbea is one of Africa’s most fascinating “stapeliad” succulent genera – leafless, clump-forming perennials with sharply toothed, four-angled stems often mottled maroon-on-green, and unforgettable carrion-scented blooms adapted for fly pollination. Flowers range widely in size and form (often with a distinctive raised central ring/annulus that inspired the genus name), and the plants typically produce paired horn-like seed follicles that release silky-tufted seeds to the wind. Naturally, Orbea is widespread across Africa and extends into the Arabian Peninsula, with especially rich diversity in southern Africa – making it a rewarding genus for collectors and gardeners who love unusual, ecologically clever succulents.
Orbea melanantha (Caralluma australis, Caralluma leendertziae, Caralluma melanantha, Caralluma melanantha sousae, Caralluma rubiginosa, Orbeopsis melanantha)
If you love stapeliads with serious attitude, Orbea melanantha delivers in spades: a mat-forming, ground-hugging succulent that spreads neatly across the surface, creating a living carpet of angular, tooth-edged stems. In cultivation it stays wonderfully architectural – pale green and chunky, with four flanks lined by firm triangular “teeth,” and often developing richer speckling or purplish flushing when grown in brighter light.
The real show begins when it buds up and opens its unforgettable blooms. Flowers appear in clusters and sit close to the stems, forming shallow, starry bowls that range from black to deep purple and very dark purple-red, often with a paler centre. The inner surfaces are textured and can be fringed with fine, vibrating hairs, giving the blooms a velvety, otherworldly look that collectors crave.
In habitat, O. melanantha occurs in Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and South Africa (recorded from Free State, Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga), typically among Acacia on stony ground with short grasses – exactly the kind of setting that explains its love of bright light, warmth, and fast-draining mineral soils.
Flowering is most often from spring through late summer (commonly around October to February in southern African conditions), making it a brilliant seasonal highlight in any water-wise collection – especially when the sun catches those dark blooms against fresh green stems.
