Orbea is one of Africa’s most fascinating “stapeliadsucculent genera – leafless, clump-forming perennials with sharply toothed, four-angled stems often mottled maroon-on-green, and unforgettable carrion-scented blooms adapted for fly pollination. Flowers range widely in size and form (often with a distinctive raised central ring/annulus that inspired the genus name), and the plants typically produce paired horn-like seed follicles that release silky-tufted seeds to the wind. Naturally, Orbea is widespread across Africa and extends into the Arabian Peninsula, with especially rich diversity in southern Africa – making it a rewarding genus for collectors and gardeners who love unusual, ecologically clever succulents.

Orbea cooperi (Stapelia cooperi, Stapeliopsis cooperi, Stultitia cooperi)

If you love the strange, starry world of stapeliads, Orbea cooperi is pure collector’s magic – compact, architectural, and topped with flowers that look like they were designed for a sci-fi set. From seed it forms tight clumps that quickly become little living sculptures in a pot, perfect for windowsills, sunny patios, or a specialist succulent bench.

Plants grow as low, clustering stems with crisp angles and small tooth-like points, often showing attractive mottling and marbling in greens with deeper reddish-brown or purple tones – camouflage that helps them disappear into rocky veld. The overall look is neat and chunky rather than lanky, making it an ideal species for shallow bowls and display pots where the stems can mound and spill naturally.

When it blooms, Orbea cooperi rewards you with bold five-pointed, star-shaped flowers in warm tones – often honey-gold to tan or brownish, usually packed with fine pale speckling and a richer, darker central “eye” that can deepen toward burgundy. In habitat, flowering is generally tied to the warmer, rainier part of the year (often after summer rains), which in cultivation usually translates to late-summer into autumn displays when the plant is growing strongly.

In the wild, Orbea cooperi is a South African species of the drier western and central interior, and it has also been recorded further north-east in provinces such as Gauteng and Mpumalanga. It grows in open grassy places among rocks – often associated with substrates like quartzite and/or dolerite – where drainage is sharp and the plants tuck into protected pockets.

Add this charismatic stapeliad to your collection and enjoy the excitement of raising genuinely diverse, seed-grown plants – each one its own little pattern variation.
