Melianthus comosus or Kruidjie-roer-my-nie as it is commonly known in Afrikaans forms an eye-catching multi-stemmed shrub which is perfect for the low maintenance, water-wise garden. Because of the lovely shapes of the leaves it makes a stunning accent plant next to a pond and can also be used, with great effect, to form an informal shrub border. All parts of the plant produce a strong, unpleasant smell when bruised, hence the Afrikaans name. Traditionally Melianthus comosus leaves are used to treat ailments such as backache, rheumatism and septic wounds. As the English common name, Honey flower, so justly points out, the plants flowers produce copious amounts of sweet nectar which will attract sunbirds and butterflies to the garden.
