Kniphofia (Red hot poker, Torch lily, Poker plant) is a genus of plants in the family Asphodelaceae that includes 70 or more species native to Africa. Some species have been commercially used for horticultural use and are commonly known for their bright, rocket-shaped flowers. These plants produce spikes of brightly-coloured, hanging, red-to-orange flowers. This gives names such as “torch” and “red hot poker” to many of them.
Kniphofia grantii, synonymously known as Kniphofia flavovirens, Kniphofia mpalensis or Kniphofia zombensis, is an exotic species found in DRC, Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi and Zimbabwe growing in seasonally flooded grassland and montane grassland at altitudes of 950 to 2000m. Plants are generally 30cm to 120cm, especially when in flower it reaches a height of 1.2m. During summer it bears striking flowers that range from solid yellow to bicoloured yellow and deep orange.
