Grielum is a genus of four accepted species of plants in the family Neuradaceae. They are low-growing herbs endemic to dry regions, mainly in Western South Africa and Namibia. The genus comprises dwarf herbs with pronounced taproots.
Grielum grandiflorum, synonymously known as Grielum tenuifolium and commonly known as Duikerwortel or Platdoring in Afrikaans, is a South African endemic species found in the Northern Cape and Western Cape provinces. The taproot is well developed as a storage organ and is an important source of food and moisture for some animals such as duiker, so much so that one of its common names is “duikerwortel”, Afrikaans for “duiker root”; duikers are notorious for digging up the root from sandy soils. It also was an important food plant for local hunter-gatherers. It is thick and so mucilaginous that it also is known by variations on the name “Pietsnot”, meaning “snotty Pete”. The taproot of Grielum grandiflorum is relished even by some campers when roasted on a campfire.
It grows into a prostrate perennial with cobwebby stems. It is found along coastal stretches where, during spring, it blooms with glossy bright yellow eye-catching flowers that attract pollinators like bees and butterflies. The silvery leaves are in nice contrast to the glossy bright yellow flowers.
