The genus Felicia is one of southern Africa’s most charming daisy groups, celebrated for its sparkling yellow centres framed by ray florets in shades of blue, violet, lilac and white. Belonging to the Asteraceae, these plants range from tiny ground-hugging cushions and rocky crevice specialists to airy shrublets dancing above dry grasslands and fynbos slopes. Many Felicia species are exquisitely adapted to harsh conditions – sun, wind, poor soils and seasonal drought – yet reward gardeners with clouds of cheerful blooms that attract bees, butterflies and other pollinators. With their wild elegance and remarkable resilience, Felicia daisies bring a distinctly South African brilliance to gardens worldwide.
Felicia tenella subsp. tenella (Aster tenellus, Aster tenellus robustus, Cineraria tenella, Detris tenella, Felicia fragilis)
A favourite for wildflower lovers, Felicia tenella subsp. tenella is the kind of plant that makes a habitat-style planting feel instantly real. It forms small, low clumps and produces delicate daisy blooms that look as though they’ve naturally settled into the landscape – ideal for anyone building an indigenous rockery, wild garden edge, or naturalistic groundcover scene.
This subspecies is a South African endemic with a notably broad recorded range, including the Western Cape. It is a versatile choice for gardeners across South Africa, and a reliable option internationally where bright light and good drainage can be provided.
Plants are small and lightly spreading, with fine stems and foliage that create a soft green base. The daisy flowers carry a golden centre with narrow rays that commonly appear pale lilac to lavender, giving a fresh, “miniature aster” look. In a group planting, the flowers pop up like little natural fireworks across the patch.
For seed buyers, this is an excellent species for creating a living, flowering carpet in the foreground of beds, between rocks, or around larger companion plants where it can fill gaps with delicate colour. It also performs beautifully in troughs and shallow planters, where its small scale and fine texture can be appreciated up close.
Cultivation Note: Sow into a well-drained sandy mix and keep gently moist until germination. Provide full sun and good airflow for compact growth. Once established, water moderately and allow the soil to dry slightly between watering – this keeps plants healthy and encourages better flowering.
