The genus Felicia is one of southern Africa’s most charming daisy groups, celebrated for its sparkling yellow centres framed by ray florets in shades of blue, violet, lilac and white. Belonging to the Asteraceae, these plants range from tiny ground-hugging cushions and rocky crevice specialists to airy shrublets dancing above dry grasslands and fynbos slopes. Many Felicia species are exquisitely adapted to harsh conditions – sun, wind, poor soils and seasonal drought – yet reward gardeners with clouds of cheerful blooms that attract bees, butterflies and other pollinators. With their wild elegance and remarkable resilience, Felicia daisies bring a distinctly South African brilliance to gardens worldwide.

Felicia filifolia subsp. filifolia (Aster filifolius, Diplopappus filifolius, Diplopappus filifolius teretifolius, Diplopappus teretifolius, Diplostephium filifolium, Diplostephium teretifolium) – Common Fine Felicia, Fine-leaved Felicia; Bakbos, Bergdraaibos, Blombossie, Bloudraaibos, Draaibos, Ghombos, Noembos, Persbergdraaibos, Persdraaibos, Wilde-aster

Often called Fine-leaved Felicia (and sometimes grouped under the broader “Felicia daisy” umbrella), Felicia filifolia subsp. filifolia is a beautifully airy, aromatic-looking shrublet with slender, needle-fine foliage and a natural “fynbos elegance” that reads as wild, clean, and refined. In flower it becomes a soft cloud of daisy blooms, each with bright golden centres framed by lilac-to-mauve rays – exactly the kind of wild charm that suits rock gardens, dry borders, and collector pots.

This subspecies, indigenous to South Africa, is associated with rocky, mountainous and dry shrubland landscapes from the Cape through the Karoo and northwards, thriving where soils are lean and drainage is fast. In the right season it produces a generous flush of blooms that sits neatly above the foliage, giving the plant a delicate, “floating flower” look that matches the naturalistic habit seen in the images.

Flowering is typically late winter through spring into early summer, with a long enough display to make it feel like a true feature species when grown in bright light. Seed-grown plants are rewarding because they preserve that naturally fine texture, and they develop into compact, floriferous shrubs that look excellent in both South African water-wise gardens and Mediterranean-climate collections abroad.

Cultivation Note: Sow on the surface or barely cover with fine sand, keep evenly moist until germination, and grow on in full sun with sharp drainage. Once established, allow the soil to dry between waterings – this species rewards “dry and bright” conditions with stronger growth and heavier flowering.
