The genus Esterhuysenia is in the family Mesembrianthemum (Aizoaceae) in the major group Angiosperms (flowering plants); commonly known as vygie or mesembs. This family of plants forms a major and unique component of South Africas arid land flora; the succulents. They are extremely diverse and particularly in the Karoo Region.
Esterhuysenia alpina, formerly known as Lampranthus alpinus, is a South African endemic species from the Western Cape Provinces Hex River Mountains. It grows to 15cm tall and forms a compact shrublet with reddish branches, free leaves and magenta flowers during spring. This species is found on high mountains in the South-Western Cape. It needs cool conditions with bright light to perform at its best. It is best sown in autumn.
