Elephantorrhiza is a genus in the Fabaceae family. The genus Elephantorrhiza is an exclusively African genus and consists of nine species with several infraspecific taxa. Their habitats include almost all major biomes south of the equator. As a group, they are fairly homogeneous. The closest related genus is Entada which includes the well-known Snuff Box Sea Bean (Entada rheedii) and together they form the Entada -group within the Mimosoideae subfamily of the Fabaceae or Leguminosae.
Elephantorrhiza suffruticosa, synonymously known as Entada rangei and commonly known as Skew-leaved Sumach Bean or Skew-leaved Elephant-root, is a deciduous, multi-stemmed shrub or small tree up to 6 meters in height which may be found on hills as well as plains. It is native to Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Angola and Namibia. It has grey/brown to reddish brown bark. The midribs of the leaves are not central, it runs along the extreme inner edge of the leaves. During spring or early summer, while still leafless, long, sulphur-yellow flower spikes decorate the plants. The large feathery leaves, reminiscent of Jacaranda leaves, appear in summer.
