Jacaranda is a genus of 49 species of flowering plants in the family Bignoniaceae, native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas. The generic name is also used as the common name. They are shrubs to large trees ranging in size from 20m to 30m. They thrive in full sun and sandy soils, which explains their abundance in warmer climates. Mature plants can survive in colder climates down to negative 7°C however, they may not bloom as profusely. Several species are widely grown as ornamental plants throughout the subtropical regions of the world, valued for their intense flower displays. The most often seen is the blue jacaranda, Jacaranda mimosifolia, found in abundance lining the streets of Pretoria in South Africa.
Jacaranda caucana, commonly known as Blue Flamboyant, is a non-invasive species that should not be confused with the invasive species, Jacaranda mimosifolia which is commonly found in cities throughout South Africa. Jacaranda caucana is a small to medium sized, dry deciduous tree with pinnate, fern-like foliage and masses of purplish-blue flowers that make it a rather spectacular sight for two months when in bloom during its leafless stage. It is native from Costa Rica to Venezuela and best adapted to tropical climates. With its attractive foliage and eye-catching flowers, it makes a brilliant landscape tree as well as an appealing tree to be treated as a container plant and bonsai.
