Berkheya is a striking South African genus in the daisy family (Asteraceae), celebrated for its bold, spiny rosettes and radiant, long-lasting blooms. With roughly 70–80 species, the genus ranges from the winter-rainfall west through the Karoo to the summer-rainfall grasslands and Drakensberg. Plants typically form low, architectural clumps of toothed or silver-felted leaves that set off showy, sunflower-like capitula in clear yellows, creams or, in a few species such as B. purpurea, unexpected lilacs and mauves. The name honours the Dutch naturalist Jan le Francq van Berkhey.

Ecologically, Berkheya species are tough survivors of rocky slopes, dolerite outcrops and open veld, where their spines deter grazers and their nectar-rich flowers draw bees, beetles and other pollinators. The genus even includes a botanical celebrity—Berkheya coddii—renowned as a nickel hyperaccumulator on ultramafic soils. This natural resilience translates beautifully to water-wise gardening: once established, many species handle heat, wind and summer dry spells with ease.

In cultivation, Berkheya rewards full sun, sharp drainage and modest feeding. Plants are excellent focal points for fynbos, Karoo and rock-garden schemes, pairing well with restios, grasses and other arid-adapted perennials. Most species grow readily from seed and will flower within a season or two, adding texture and luminous colour to South African gardens and landscapes.

Berkheya coddii — often listed as Stobaea coddii — is the celebrated “Nickel Berkheya” or “Codd’s Daisy-thistle”, a tough, architectural South African–Zimbabwean perennial prized for its luminous flowers and almost iridescent, lime-green bracts. Native to ultramafic, metal-rich grasslands of northern Limpopo and the Great Dyke of Zimbabwe, it thrives where many plants fail: on rocky, well-drained, nutrient-poor soils in full sun with summer rain. Plants form sturdy, leafy clumps 60–100 cm tall, with narrow, lightly toothed, grey-green leaves along upright stems. From early to high summer the buds open into distinctive, golden-yellow daisies held in tight clusters; each bloom sits in a striking green “ruff” of bracts, giving the inflorescences a fresh, almost citrus glow. Flowering in South Africa is mainly from November to March, continuing longer with good late-season rain.

Beyond its beauty, Berkheya coddii is famous as a natural nickel hyperaccumulator and is used worldwide in research and demonstration plantings for phytoremediation and metal-tolerant landscaping. In local gardens it’s a superb, water-wise choice for Highveld and summer-rainfall regions, weaving effortlessly into grassland, fynbos-style, or prairie plantings and providing reliable colour in the hottest months. The blooms are excellent for cut or dried arrangements, their green ruffs adding texture, while the nectar-rich centres draw bees, hoverflies and other beneficial pollinators. Sow seed in spring in a gritty mix, keep just moist and bright, and plant out into sunny, well-drained spots — the poorer the soil, the happier this rugged, indigenous show-stopper.
