Anacampseros is the ancient name for an herb that was supposed to restore lost love. The genus Anacampseros used to have a larger number of species. It has now been split in 3 genera; Anacampseros and Avonia, both indigenous to South Africa, and Grahamia with species in the Americas and Australia. Anacampseros is placed in the Portulacaceae family. Plants in this genus are characterized by rosettes of highly fleshy leaves. Depending on the species, the leaves can be lance-shaped to almost round. Some plants are covered in fine hairs, while others have scaly formations on their leaves. Generally they dont grow much taller than 8cm. Flowers appear in the summer months and may be pink or purple, opening during the day and closing again in the evening. Most Anacampseros species favour bright indirect light and rich, well-drained soil. The soil should be allowed to drain completely between watering and should be fortified with enrichments in the spring to encourage the plant to emerge fully from winter semi-dormancy.
Anacampseros vanthielii is a recently described South African endemic species that is narrowly distributed in the Steinkopf area of the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. The dark green leaves are almost clavate in form with yellowish hair protruding from the apex. The flowers are pink-red.
